Organize accessories to save space
June 15, 2015
Packing for college can be tricky, especially when it comes to accessories. How does one decide which jewelry and accessory pieces to leave at home and which to pack? Here are a few tips to organize accessories to save space.
Hanging jewelry organizer
Jewelry organizers can be found at many stores such as Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond and other retailers. Organizers are a huge space saver if one has a lot of necklaces, bracelets or other jewelry pieces. Some are fabric and feature pockets and others are plastic and are great for hanging necklaces. Purchasing one of the hanging organizers allows students to bring their favorite jewelry pieces without sacrificing space. When packing jewelry, pick pieces that will go with a lot of outfits. First pack necklaces that are clear or neutral in color. Then pack a few brightly colored pieces.
It’s best to have a few go-to pieces rather than bringing every piece from home. For earrings, stick with a few pair of studs like basic rhinestone and pearls, but also pack a few fun statement pieces. In general, don’t over-pack when it comes to jewelry and remember to leave valuables at home.
Scarf holder
Another great organizer to purchase is a scarf hanger. These hangers are great to store fashion scarves or scarves for cold weather. For someone who lives out of state, it is important to have thicker scarves ready in case the weather changes before heading home is an option. When packing for school come prepared with at least one thick scarf. One can never predict the Iowa weather, so it is better to be safe than sorry.
Skirt hangers
Skirt hangers are a great investment for students who own a lot of shorts, skirts or pants. Find multiple tiered skirt hangers at organization stores like The Container Store. These hangers are great because you can fit four to five skirts or pants on one hanger. They are great for saving space in the small residence hall wardrobes.
Rolling bins
For beds that aren’t lofted, use under-the-bed storage bins to maximize your space. Rolling bins are great to store shoes or purses under your bed. Keep seasonal items or items that don’t get used on a regular basis under the bed.
Belt hooks
Many home goods stores offer small hooks that are great for hanging belts. One can simply stick this hook-like hanger in their closet and it is a great way to organize and store belts and other items.
