Nine athletes headed to Texas for ISU men’s track and field
May 27, 2015
Nine athletes from the ISU men’s track and field team earned trips to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA West Preliminaries on May 28-30.
They will all attempt to make a qualifying bid to the the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 from each event will qualify.
Here is a look at all of the athletes and their chances going into the weekend.
Edward Kemboi
Kemboi took a first-place finish in the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800 and 1,000-meter races. He will continue on his path to claim a title in the 800 for the outdoor championships, something he hasn’t done in his career.
He finished 15th in the 800 last season, his worst career finish at the NCAA meet.
The road to improving starts with the NCAA West Preliminaries.
His chances appear bright as he enters with the second best seed time at 1:46.17 in the sixth heat. And he certainly sounds confident.
“[I came] home [after last season] and [worked] harder than I used to,” he said on Twitter. “This year I ain’t playing games.”
Cameron Ostrowski
Along with Kemboi, Ostrowski will be another favorite from the Cyclones to make the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The high jumper from Burlington, Ill., will attempt to rid himself of his recent ankle troubles to make his second bid to the NCAA meet.
His most recent performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship shows he has the potential to make big noise this weekend. He shattered his season-best mark, clearing 7-feet-3-inches on his way to a comfortable sixth place finish.
That jump will be his seed mark for the preliminaries.
But it won’t be easy with the always tough field in the west. He will once again be against one of the best jumpers in the nation, Jacorian Duffield, along with the rest of the talented Texas Tech jumping team.
“I don’t want to even miss a bar this weekend,” Ostrowski said. “I don’t want to miss one going to 7-2. That will give me a good shot for [the NCAA Outdoor Championships].”
Patrick Peterson
Peterson will compete alongside Kemboi in the 800.
This will be Peterson’s first time competing at the NCAA West Preliminaries after transferring to Iowa State from Sacred Heart.
His seed time of 1:48.14 doesn’t measure up to his all-American teammate, but he is on the fringe of the top 12 to make the NCAA meet in two weeks.
Brian Biekert
Biekert will be the lone ISU runner in the 1,500-meter run after squeaking in with his performance at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
He is on the outside looking in with a seed time of 3:44.35, but has a good shot with his improving trend of times.
Brian Llamas
Llamas will have a long ways to go one way or another to the NCAA meet, competing in the second longest race in the meet, the 5,000-meter run.
He will be in the second of two heats and his seed time of 14:04.53 ranks in the bottom half of the field.
Logan Schneider
The true freshman out of Illinois didn’t start competing in the hurdles until his senior year of high school, but that didn’t stop him from making an appearance in the preliminaries at a young age.
Schneider will compete in the 110-meter hurdles. His seed time of 14.25 gives him an outside chance to qualify for nationals.
“I think that I have a good shot,” Schneider said. “Like my coach says, I just have to run my own race and not worry about what other people are doing.”
Derek Jones
Schneider’s fellow hurdler Jones will be in the NCAA West Preliminaries 400-meter hurdle race for the second straight season.
He hasn’t been able to replicate his success from last season, failing to best his personal record in the 400 hurdles from last season’s Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
He enters with a seed time of 52.22, which is about a second slower than any other athlete in his heat.
Jan Jeuschede
The German shot putter has only competed in one meet this outdoor season — the Big 12 Outdoor Championship. His throw in that meet, 18.79 meters, is his seed this weekend.
He will attempt to make his third straight NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Henry Kelley
This will be Kelley’s first NCAA West Preliminary as a redshirt senior. He destroyed his previous personal record at the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, throwing 196-04.
His seed throw of 59.85 meters is in the lower half of his heat, but he has shown steady improvement ever since his win at the Jim Duncan Invitational more than a month ago.
