Men’s golf in second after day one of Big 12 Championship

At the midway point of the Big 12 Championship, the ISU men’s golf team finds itself in second place, trailing only No. 2 Texas.

Through two of four rounds at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., No. 42 Iowa State is at 23-over-par (298+285) and trails Texas by 16 shots. The Cyclones head a group of four teams all within seven shots of second place, with No. 25 Texas Tech looming two shots behind in third.

Heading Iowa State’s effort on day one was Nick Voke. The sophomore is tied for fifth place at three-over-par after rounds of 70 and 73.

In a tie for seventh place is senior Scott Fernandez, who had the lowest round of the team with a 68 in round two. He posted a 76 in round one and is at four-over-par.

The third Cyclone in the top 10 is Sam Daley. The senior is seeking a second straight top-10 at the Big 12 Championship and is on pace to do so after rounds of 75 and 70 have him in ninth place.

Sophomore Ruben Sondjaja is tied for 27th out of 45 golfers after posting scores of 77 and 74. Redshirt junior Collin Foster is in 45th place. His scores of 82 and 81 were not considered for team scoring.

The third round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Iowa State will begin play at 9:40 a.m. and will be grouped with Texas and Texas Tech.
