ISU gymnastics finishes third at Big 12 Championships

Iowa State traveled to Norman, Okla. on March 21 for the 2015 Big 12 Championships against West Virginia and Oklahoma.
The Cyclones finished third of the three participants with a team score of 194.725. Oklahoma took first with a team score of 197.875 and West Virginia claimed second with 195.025.
The Cyclones began on the beam, earning a team score of 48.175. Haylee Young, competing in her first conference championship, led the team with a score of 9.800. Alex Marasco followed Young’s score with a 9.775.
It was a rough night for the other ISU gymnasts on the beam, with their scores averaging out to a 9.400. This put Iowa State in third after the meet’s first rotation.
Iowa State moved on to the floor, looking for a stronger team score. The team stepped up and earned a score of 49.080. Young once again led the way, posting a score of 9.875, and Caitlin Brown came in right behind her at 9.850. Kelsey Paz also recorded a high score, bringing in a 9.800. These performances bumped the Cyclones to a slim second place, just ahead of West Virginia.
The Cyclones moved on to the vault, with individual scores averaging 9.700. The team recorded a score of 48.650. This effort slid the team back to third, with West Virginia ahead by .125 and Oklahoma dominating by 2.375. Courtney Middelkoop and Alex Marasco led the team with their scores of 9.775.
Senior Caitlin Brown recorded her career high in the next rotation, the bars, with a score of 9.900. This helped bring the team to a score of 48.850 on the bars. Even with a strong finish by Brown, the team still fell into third at the end of the meet by .300.
While Iowa State did finish in last place, Haylee Young walked away with first place in the all-around, posting a score of 39.125. ISU gymnastics will continue on in the NCAA Regionals at 4 p.m. April 4 in Ames.
