Iowa State’s hot start helped the team cap off the Cyclone Indoor Invitational with a win against South Dakota State.

The Cyclones jumped ahead of the Jack Rabbits when junior Aly Cappaert hit a double that brought senior Lexi Slater and freshman Nychole Antillon across home plate and pushed Iowa State to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning.

In the third, the Cyclones extended their lead to 4-0 when Slater hit a sacrifice fly to bring home senior Maddie Reese. After that play, the Cyclones added another run to the score via a single from Antillon, which drove in another run, making the score 5-0.

The Jack Rabbits climbed back to within two runs on the strength of a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

ISU Pitcher Brianna Weilbacher was replaced by fellow pitcher Katie Johnson following the blast.

Even though both teams had chances in the final three innings to score, both failed to capitalize and the scoring stalled. The final game tally was 5-3 in favor of the Cyclones.

Iowa State will play Ole Miss at 9:00 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Conway, S.C.
