Big 12 basketball power rankings: Week 14
February 11, 2015
1. Kansas (20-4, 9-2 Big 12) [No change [—] from last week]
The Jayhawks are flying high enough that a loss hardly even moves the needle in then Big 12 race. Iowa State wasn’t able to pick up a crucial road win at Oklahoma to keep up with the Kansas and it appears the title is theirs for the taking.
2. Oklahoma (17-7, 8-4 Big 12) [+1]
After losing four out of five games during a two-week stretch, Oklahoma has reeled off five-straight wins, including the high-scoring horse race against Iowa State to take second place in the conference. The Sooners have a much easier path than the Cyclones through the rest of the season, but still have to travel to Ames late in the season.
3. Iowa State (17-6, 7-4 Big 12) [-1]
A dominant win against Texas Tech may have been the revenge the Cyclones were looking for, but the loss to the Red Raiders earlier this season continues to haunt the team as they dropped behind Oklahoma in a road loss to the Sooners. The Cyclones have some serious road issues and the defense has some work to do to crawl back ahead of the Sooners.
4. Oklahoma State (17-7, 7-5 Big 12) [+1]
Nobody had a better week than the Cowboys, who reeled off three ranked wins against Kansas at home and Texas and Baylor on the road. Oklahoma State’s defense may be one of the most underrated units in the Big 12, only allowing 70 points or more in one Big 12 game this season.
5. Baylor (18-6, 6-5 Big 12) [+1]
The Bears picked up a great road win at West Virginia, where Baylor’s size was able to outlast West Virginia’s physical defense. However, Oklahoma State was able to sweep the Bears in the regular season with a win in Waco, where the Bears play their best, leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.
6. West Virginia (18-5, 6-4 Big 12) [-2]
The Mountaineers were flat out beat for the second game in a row, but losing by double digits on their home floor for the second time this season is a bad look. West Virginia is just 1-4 against ranked Big 12 teams this season, which doesn’t bode well with six of their next seven opponents currently ranked in the AP Poll.
7. Texas (15-8, 4-6 Big 12) [—]
Even in a win, Texas made things look bad. Against an overmatched, shorthanded Kansas State team, Texas nearly let the Wildcats take the game back in the final minutes, stealing a 61-57 win on the road. With five of its last seven games against ranked opponents and four on the road, Texas can’t afford any more disappointing basketball.
8. Kansas State (12-12, 5-6 Big 12) [—]
With Marcus Foster, the Wildcats are a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 team. Without Marcus Foster, the team is struggling to score more points than its football team this season. No one knows how long Foster will be suspended, but it’s safe to say Kansas State’s season has already seen its best days.
9. TCU (14-9, 1-9 Big 12) [—]
The Horned Frogs have been flat-out unimpressive as the Big 12 season has progressed, but have also played eight ranked teams in 10 games. Sure, everyone has to play the same schedule in the Big 12, but the front half of TCU’s schedule certainly hasn’t helped their record.
10. Texas Tech (12-13, 2-10 Big 12) [—]
They may have more wins than the Horned Frogs, but they aren’t necessarily better. They lost to TCU by 20 earlier this season at home and their win against Kansas State likely had more to do with the Wildcats being without their star player and less about the Red Raiders’ talent.
