Signs of a human trafficking victim

Michaela Ramm

In order to stop human trafficking, it’s important to recognize the signs of a victim in distress and to help them in any way that you can. Here’s are some clues that someone may be trapped in the sex trade.

• They show signs of depression and abuse, often avoid eye contact

• They are never alone, and often have someone speaking/translating for them

• Are secretive about where they live and have no control over their finances

• Work long hours for little to no pay, and suffers unusual restrictions at their job

• Has no form of identification

• Is afraid of law enforcement or anyone offering outside help

If you believe you know a victim of human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Resource center hotline at 1-888-373-7888
