Bar Guide: Things bartenders hate

Samantha Berrafato

bartender have their own pet peeves, so don’t let your night out spoil theirs. Keep your bartender happy and you’ll have a great night out. Here are a few things you should know that bartenders hate.

1. The customer who doesn’t know what he or she wants

Some people will walk up to the bar and have no clue what to order. If the bar is busy, wait until you know what you want before bothering the bartender while you are figuring it out.

2. A customer who thinks he or she can get a discount for no reason

Flirting won’t work. Neither will complaining about the price. Just pay what you owe.

3. Customers who don’t tip.

Bartenders don’t make much money per hour, and when they are dealing with customers who are drunk and crazy, they deserve a little extra cash. Don’t skimp.

4. Customers who are excessively demanding

According to bartender Baily Heintz, there are many of these types of customers. Heintz said that some march up to the bar and demand things when the bartender is obviously busy.

5. A customer who comes in and has a low tab all night

Buying one drink and nothing else is a nuisance for bartenders like Heintz because then they aren’t making much of a tip and it creates extra work for them.

6. Customers who throw their money at the bartender

Dan Schaefer, a bartender at Cy’s Roost, said that he gets annoyed when people just push money into his face or throw money at him.

7. Customers who try to VIP themselves

Heintz said that people will think that they are special or a VIP if they get into the bar, but that’s not the case for everyone.

8. Customers who dirty up the bathrooms

Clean up at the end of the night would be a lot easier if the customers did their part to keep things clean. Schaefer said that he thinks girls like to throw toilet paper around the bathroom.

9. Customers who don’t leave at the end of the night

Heintz said she gets annoyed when they turn on the lights at closing and tell people to leave, yet they just sit and chat longer or refuse to go.

10. Hawkeye Fans

Most ISU fans will agree with this one, but Schaefer said this is one of his biggest pet peeves at the bar.
