Movie Review: ‘Sex Tape’

Jarrett Quick

“Sex Tape” never really commits to being a romantic comedy or a raunchy R-rated one, but there are a few laughs to be had thanks to the solid cast.

The plot of “Sex Tape” is about as straight forward as you can get. Annie and Jay, played by Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel, respectively, have been together for 10 years and their sex life is much less electric than it used to be. To spice things up, the two decide to make a sex tape on Jay’s iPad, leading to the video being uploaded on to the iPads of several of their friends. To save themselves from embarrassment, the couple has to stop the video and delete it before the video is found by their friends and family.

This film has a great cast, especially Rob Lowe as Annie’s boss, but the film seemed to have a 50-50 success rate at getting a laugh. Diaz and Segel are both charismatic leads, and they are fully committed to the films slapstick bits, but a lot of the drama in the film seems forced and out of place. I think the attempt to make the film weirdly family friendly while also trying to push the envelope with some of the physical gags makes for an altogether uneven and stilted movie.

One thing I did appreciate about “Sex Tape” was its surprising heart near the end. Director Jake Kasdan clearly has taken inspiration from Judd Apatow in regards to style, but he never really reaches the depths that movies like “Funny People” and “This is 40” reach. I think Kasdan definitely has potential, especially since this is much better than his last Diaz/Segel project “Bad Teacher.”

“Sex Tape” is not great, and it never really dedicates itself to the possibilities of its premise, but it’s worth a rent. Segel is funny, and he and Diaz work well together. Come for Segal, stay for the bizarre performance by Rob Lowe.
