Deloitte returns to campus for follow up meetings

A team from Deloitte Consulting is scheduled to return to campus May 7 and 8 for follow-up meetings as part of the statewide Board of Regents efficiency review of the public universities.

The team was initially on campus the week of April 14 for interviews with campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students as well as administrative and other business officers.

Miles Lackey, chief of staff and Iowa State’s representative to the review committee, said the team’s return to campus is another opportunity for them to ask follow-up questions from the initial meetings.

“Deloitte is going to continue the process of looking into a number of areas on campus for opportunities to operate more efficiently here and across the other campuses as well,” Lackey said.

Lackey said he isn’t sure of the meeting schedule, but he said Deloitte will be meeting with members from facilities and auxiliary departments.

Facilities management includes areas such as building and utilities services, construction and sustainability. Auxiliary operations include the Veenker Memorial Golf Course, postal services and ISU flight service.

Lackey said Deloitte won’t be focusing on the academic portion of the efficiency review during the summer months because there are less students and faculty around.

Deloitte is still in the early stages of the review, Lackey said. Phase one includes collecting data from different departments on campus, such as human resources, student services, academic support, information technology and finance and administration.

“There are opportunities to operate more efficiently and to ensure that we are doing the most with the resources that we have,” Lackey said. “That’s what they’re going to try to identify. All they’re doing now is trying to identify some opportunities to operate more efficiently.”

All savings found at each of the universities will stay at that university, Bruce Rastetter, Board of Regents president, said at Iowa State’s public forum April 1.

Lackey said he thinks there will be another open forum in the fall of 2014.
