Movie Review: “Oculus”

Jordan Mains

In the horror flick “Oculus,” brother and sister Kaylie and Tim Russell have managed to survive a horrifying phenomenon that occurred ten years ago, but their parents were not so fortunate. Now the phenomenon has come back into their lives, putting them both in danger.

This movie is a slow starter. For about the first 20-30 minutes of the movie, you probably are not going to know what exactly is going on; that can be quite irritating.

All that is really revealed in the beginning of the movie is that something happened when Kaylie and Tim were kids and that this creepy looking mirror is responsible for what happened. Once we know what is going on though, this is a good horror film. It is filled with many creepy surprises and things that will make you cringe.

Eventually, we discover that because of this mirror the parents of Kaylie and Tim are now dead because of an incident that happened ten years ago. The mirror basically makes whoever is in its presence lose their mind and makes them do life-threatening things to themselves and others.

After researching previous owners of the mirror, Kaylie discovered that each of them had died in similar ways. There is some sort of supernatural force within the mirror that plays tricks with your mind by making you see whatever it wants you to see.

The mirror is responsible for the deaths of Kaylie and Tim’s parents because it drove their father to kill their mother and for Tim to kill their father.

Kaylie purchases the mirror at an auction with the intention of destroying it. It is not easy though, as the mirror has ways of defending itself.

The movie also goes back and forth a lot between Kaylie and Tim when they were kids and the same two in the present day as adults. Due to that reason, the movie can be really confusing at times. It can also be tough to distinguish what’s real and what is not.

Still, I really liked this film and I would love to watch it again. There is a lot of content in this movie to take in, so I would say it has a high replay value. Probably one of the better horror films I have seen as of late.
