Movie review: ‘Heaven is for Real’

Jordan Mains

Based on the book which is based on real-life events, “Heaven is for Real” is the inspirational film of young Colton Burpo, who claims to have gone to heaven momentarily during a near-death experience.

I just want to start this review off by saying that I am by no means a religious man. Even so, I try to be fair and unbiased with my writing when it comes to films having to do with religion.

Anyways, once Todd and Sonja Burpo discover that their son is suffering from appendicitis, he is immediately taken into surgery. While Colton’s put under the anesthesia, he experiences a life-altering occurrence. He has an out-of-body experience where he sees the doctors operating on his unconscious body, sees his family saying their prayers and even makes a trip to heaven where he sees Jesus and angels that sing melodies to him. Colton even meets a few of his dead relatives, including his unborn sister that died after his mother had a miscarriage.

After his near-death experience, Colton tells his friends and family about his trip to heaven. Of course no one actually believes him at first, but eventually he starts to make his dad wonder. Somehow, Colton knew of things that were basically impossible to know unless he had been told by someone.

That is pretty much the entire plot of this movie, and the whole point is to make you wonder if Colton’s experience was truly legitimate or not.

One thing I do like about this movie is that it does not shove Christianity into the faces of viewers. It basically just tells you an inspiring tale of this young boy, and lets you decide for yourself whether or not his experience was for real or not.

I am not sure that this movie has the ability to make non-believers see the light, but it is a nice inspiring film for those of the Christian faith. I myself, still have trouble believing that his experience was truly legitimate, but that’s something you can judge for yourself after seeing the film.
