Letter to the Editor: ISU students are poorly informed about politics

Being a college student at Iowa State keeps one occupied almost every second of the day. From class and exams to organizations, we are inundated with information on a daily basis. However, one area in which students frequently seem to be poorly informed is politics. We like to think of ourselves as politically active, but rarely do we take the time to vote according to our personal beliefs.

Every midterm, we complain about the same low efficacy and ratings of the legislative branch. However, we repeatedly vote for the same professional class of politicians. Einstein defined insanity as, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Every two years, we talk about change and reform to our legislative institutions, and every two years, we fail to vote for candidates who offer real reform.

It’s much easier to vote along party lines or listen to negative campaign ads than to work to be an informed voter. Mark Jacobs has earned my vote in June and in November. Jacobs has offered ideas for reform and would bring common sense to government. Let’s change the tides of legislature and elect a representative who isn’t a professional politician but a concerned citizen and an experienced business leader.
