Movie Review: “How to Be a Man”

Jordan Mains

“How to Be a Man” is a comedy about a washed-up comedian named Mark McCarthy who has been diagnosed with breast cancer — yes, a man can be diagnosed with breast cancer. Since he most likely will not be around to raise his unborn son, he decides to create a film for him to learn important life lessons and to know what his father was like.

Gavin McInnes stars as Mark, and Liam Aiken stars as Bryan, the cameraman who helps Mark put the film together.

After Mark finds out that his time on earth is limited, he decides to teach his unborn son how to be a man through the ways of a documentary film. Mark is in need of a cameraman, so he reaches out on Facebook in an attempt to find someone.

He ends up with Bryan, a 22-year-old man who is more than just a little bit awkward. Mark teaches his son things like how to pick up girls, how to defend himself from others and he tells him all about drugs.

It is not long before we find out what a terrible role model Mark is. And to make things worse, Mark’s life starts to fall apart during the making of his documentary.

Although Mark is a comedian, he really is not very funny. He gets a little too much of a kick out of fart jokes and he is also the type of guy that you laugh at more than you laugh with. Do not get me wrong though, this actually adds quite a bit of humor to the film.

For the most part, this was actually a funny movie. There were a few parts that seemed to drag just a bit without much humor in them. It is not to the point where it made the movie unbearable however.

For now, the film will remain a Netflix exclusive. The movie was produced by Fox Digital Studios, so that may tell you a little more about what the movie is like. It is very rich in comedy, so check it out if that is what you are into.
