The ISU softball team suffered its worst defeat of the season falling 10-1 in five innings to San Diego State in the opening game of the Shocker Softball Classic March 7.

The Cyclones had trouble putting anything together against the Aztecs and the typically hot-hitting Cyclones struggled to get on base all day. Iowa State totaled only three hits, the lowest total for a single game this season.

The lone ISU score came when first baseman Jorden Spendlove reached home plate on a groundout to second base by ISU center fielder Brittany Gomez.

The Cyclones struggles wasn’t solely on the offensive side.

Iowa State needed work from all three pitchers to get through five innings with Katie Johnson, Stacy Roggentien and Paris Imholz all combining to give up nine hits and three walks.

Johnson took the loss for the Cyclones to bring her record to 14-5 on the season.

San Diego State had no problem getting its offense going in putting up 10 runs in five innings. The Aztecs were helped by two errors made by the Cyclones.

SDSU pitcher Danielle O’Toole held the second-best offense in the Big 12 to only one run while striking out five Cyclones.

Iowa State will take on North Dakota and Kansas City March 8 in the Shocker Classic at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. On March 9, the Cyclones will face the host, Wichita State, at 3 p.m.
