ISU softball finishes weekend at Marriott Bronco Classic with 4-1 mark

The Iowa State softball team continued its hot streak in the Marriott Bronco Classic this weekend finishing with a 4-1 record, improving to 12-2 on the season.

Iowa State defeated Santa Clara on Friday with a 3-1 victory to start off the event. Timely hitting and solid pitching from senior Sara Davison and freshman Katie Johnson keyed in the defeat of the hosting Broncos.

On Saturday, the Cyclones started their doubleheader with a 5-4 victory against San Diego. Johnson was able to earn her 10th win on the season while leading Iowa State past the Toreros.

The Cyclones dropped the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader to Sacramento State 4-0. Iowa State was unable to produce any offense as sophomore Aly Cappaert watched her record hitting streak come to an end at 18 games.

Iowa State closed out the tournament with a pair of victories Sunday. The Cyclones shut out host Santa Clara 3-0 for their second win in as many games against the Broncos.

The Cyclones finished with a come from behind 3-2 victory against San Diego. Junior Lexi Slater delivered a walk-off single to bring home senior Sarah Hawryluk and help bring the Cyclones to a 12-2 start.

Next up for Iowa State is the Purple & Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. The Cyclones will take on Lamar and Jackson State in a doubleheader next  at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, respectively.
