After suffering its first loss on the season Feb. 16, the ISU softball team bounced back with a 7-5 victory against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

The Cyclones and Islanders were tied 5-5 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Aly Cappaert gave the Cyclones the 7-5 lead with a two-run home run, her third of the weekend.

Cappaert’s single in her first at-bat during the second inning gave the sophomore a 16-game hitting streak dating back to least season, an ISU record. The designated hitter finished the game with two hits and three runs batted in, none more important than the go-ahead home run.

Freshman Katie Johnson shut down the Islanders in the bottom of the seventh inning, guiding Iowa State to the victory. Johnson finished the game having only allowed five earned runs on 17 hits spread out over seven innings of work and stranded 13 baserunners in total.

The Cyclones finished the weekend at the Troy Cox Classic with a 4-1 record bringing their overall season total to 8-1, the best start in recent history.

Iowa State will travel to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Marriot Bronco Classic next weekend. Iowa State will face Santa Clara University at 5 p.m. Feb. 21.
