The ISU softball team dropped the first game of its Friday doubleheader in the Purple & Gold Challenge to Lamar.

The Cyclones lost 3-2 after the Cardinals scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Senior Sara Rice drove in the lone runs for the Cyclones. The third baseman’s 17 runs batted in are good for the Iowa State lead in RBIs this season.

Iowa State failed to score more than two runs for only the second time this season in 15 games. Lamar was able to limit the Cyclones offensively to only six hits and two runs.

However, the offense was able to turn it around for the second game of the doubleheader against Jackson State.

The Cyclones offense poured on nine runs in the fourth inning to help defeat Jackson State 16-0 in five innings. Junior Lexi Slater led the offensive power surge going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Katie Johnson and junior transfer Stacy Roggentien combined to pitch a no-hitter, the 10th such in ISU history.

Up next for the Cyclones in the Purple & Gold Challenge is a doubleheader against Harvard and hosts No. 21 LSU at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
