ISU gymnastics falls to Penn State in season opener

The ISU gymnastics team lost its season opener on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum to No. 15 Penn State by a final score of 193.925-193.550.

The Cyclones (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell behind early, getting beat by the Nittany Lions in the first two rotations. Though Iowa State went on to take the third, Penn State sealed the victory in the final rotation.

Iowa State saw a lot of individual success throughout the meet. Senior Henrietta Green won awards on the bars with a score of 9.825 and tied fellow Cyclone Milan Ivory on the floor exercise with a mark of 9.800. Sophomore Alex Marasco and junior Caitlin Brown split the award on beam after both earned scores of 9.825.

Penn State’s Randi Lau placed first overall on the vault with a score of 9.825.

Brown also won the meet’s All-Around competition by earning a 38.900 overall. She beat out Green, who finished fourth, and four other Penn State gymnasts to win the award.

The Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum Friday, Jan. 10 to host Illinois State and Michigan. The meet is set to begin at 6:30.
