The ISU tennis team rolled in its home opener Friday, earning back-to-back victories over Southeast Missouri State and the Nebraska-Omaha, 6-0 and 7-0 respectively.

The Cyclones opened strong in the doubles matches as Ksenia Pronina and Samantha Budai won No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Ana Gasparovic and Meghan Cassens followed with an impressive effort of their own, taking down Southeast Missouri State’s Valeriia Nagovitcina and Heather Robinson, 6-2, 6-3.

Because the two ISU victories clinched the doubles point for Iowa State, No. 3 doubles remained unfinished with Caroline Andersen and Lydia Green leading in the match 5-0.

Iowa State swept the individual matches against Southeast Missouri State in dominant fashion. The closest set of the contest came in the second set at No. 4 singles where Gasparovic held on 6-4 to close out the match, 6-1, 6-4, over Redhawk Heather Robinson.

The Redhawks chose to forgo the No. 6 singles match, as Southeast Missouri State had already lost handily, and needed to travel for the second half of its own back-to-back against Northern Iowa . Thus, the final score ended up 6-0 in favor of Iowa State.

The Cyclones showed no signs of slowing down in their second contest of the afternoon against Nebraska-Omaha, where they again jumped out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point.

Pronina and Budai locked down Alex Tran and Jacqueline Baude of Nebraska-Omaha at No. 1 doubles 6-1. Not to be outdone, Cassens and Gasparovic shut out Mavericks Hylan Miller and Kenzie Hill, 6-0. As a result of the two victories, the final doubles match was again stopped short, this time with Iowa State’s Green and Andersen leading 4-3.

The singles contestes continued the theme of the day, as the Cyclones won match after match for ISU coach Armando Espinosa.

Pronina handled her business efficiently, winning 6-1, 6-2, over Alex Tran, the Maverick’s No. 1 singles player. Budai rolled in her match as well with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Molly Matricardi.

Cassens, Gasparovic, and Green each earned a point for the Cyclones, all winning in straight sets. Iowa State’s Emma Waites capped the the ISU sweep by defeating Nebraska-Omaha’s Tiffany Hottman, 6-2, 6-0.

The Cyclones will sit tight as their next meet, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31, against North Dakota, will also be played at home.
