ISU Theatre Student Profile: Mitchell Nieland

The performing arts program at Iowa State allows room for creativity and innovation and teaches students the importance of communication, both gestural and linguistic.

Students in the program may choose an emphasis in either dance or theatre. Mitchell Nieland, senior in performing arts, chose dance as his focus.

“Because of this well-rounded education, I feel more confident in my skills in many different realms of theatre-making and look forward to pursuing it professionally,” Nieland said.

In addition to general education courses, students are expected to learn the ins and outs of music, help build sets, perform backstage work and even direct plays. Having been in six mainstage productions, Nieland is familiar with the rigorous work required of him.

“I would say one of the most challenging aspects of being a performer is how time-consuming rehearsals can be. Even though it takes up a lot of time, it is time well spent making sure every part of the show is cohesive and well-understood,” Nieland said.

Most undergrads are required to complete an internship, whereas the performing arts program requires two; Nieland has completed both.

“For my first one, I was cast in “The Final Battle,” an original Harry Potter musical that performed at LeakyCon (a Harry Potter-based convention) in 2011,” Nieland said.

Nieland notes that one of the greatest rewards is learning new skills while making friends and colleagues in the process.

The ACTORS Studio in Ames provided him with his second internship in the production of “Pippin.” He was not just scheduled to perform in the play, but he was also hired as the assistant choreographer.

“Not only was I in most of the show, but I got to be a part of the collaborative process and choreographed over half of the show’s numbers,” Nieland said.

His time at Iowa State may be coming to a close, but Nieland intends on carrying his experiences with him while auditioning for dance companies and shows in Minneapolis, Minn.

“My long-term goal is to get the opportunity to perform on Broadway in New York City, hopefully fulfilling my greatest dream of performing in “Wicked,” my favorite show,” Nieland said.
