The ISU wrestling team put five wrestlers on the podium Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational en route to an eighth place finish in the team standings.

Mike Moreno led the Cyclones throughout the tournament on his way to the finals at 165 pounds against Nicholas Sulzer of Virginia. No. 5 Moreno, an All-American, was unable to bring down No. 3 Sulzer, losing a 5-2 decision and taking second.

Redshirt freshman Lelund Weatherspoon started the tournament by pinning his first opponent and securing a 3-2 decision against Northern Iowa’s Cody Caldwell. Weatherspoon lost to No. 4 Robert Kokesh and finished fifth at 174 pounds after defeating No. 14 Bryce Hammond of CSU Bakersfield.

Gabe Moreno landed on the podium at 141 pounds, earning a seventh place finish. He lost 9-0 decision to Big 12 foe Nick Lest of Oklahoma, but was able to fight his way through wrestle backs and earn a spot on the podium.

Earl Hall and Tanner Weatherman both grabbed eighth place at their weight classes. Hall made his way to the quarterfinals and had a 10-7 lead against No. 7 Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa before Peters put Hall on his back and got the pin with 30 seconds left in the match.

Weatherman dropped his second round match and worked his way through the wrestle-backs until losing to Kenny Courts of Ohio State and Nick Vetterlein of Virginia Tech. Weatherman, the Cyclones’ usual 174-pounder, wrestled up a weight class as Boaz Beard continues to recuperate from an elbow injury.

The Cyclones earned 62.5 points and finished in eighth place out of 33 teams, 12 of which were ranked in the top 25.

197-pound All-American Kyven Gadson did not compete in Las Vegas.
