Santa Clara too much to handle for ISU soccer team

The ISU soccer team struck first against Santa Clara but were no match for the Broncos, falling 5-1 Thursday, Sept. 12, in Santa Clara, Calif.

ISU midfielder Alyssa Williamson found the goal early in the second minute, scoring just outside the penalty box, but the Cyclones (4-3) went scoreless the remaining 88 minutes.

Santa Clara took advantage of the ISU mistakes and scored on a one-on-one with goalkeeper Maddie Jobe in the 10th minute. From there, the Broncos took control.

After a goal in the 21st minute, the Broncos took their 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. It did not take Santa Clara long to get back on the scoreboard.

A bounce off the head of a Cyclone in the 54th minute gave Santa Clara an easy goal before scoring again on a tap-in in the 59th minute. A goal off a free kick in the 61st minute provided the final dagger.

Iowa State managed only 9 shots to Santa Clara’s 26. Jobe recorded 10 saves with 5 goals allowed.

The Cyclones will get a few days of rest before making the 17-mile trip to Stanford, Calif., to take on No. 3 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 15. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
