In a game that was deadlocked at 1-1 for most of the second half, it took some late heroics from a freshman for the breakthrough.

Iowa State defeated South Dakota State on Friday by a score of 2-1 after freshman Koree Willer notched the game-clinching goal with three minutes remaining. Earlier in the game, Willer assisted on Lauren Roeling’s goal.

After leading 1-0 at halftime, South Dakota State’s Dani Patterson slipped the ball past Cyclone goalkeeper Maddie Jobe in the 46th minute. The deadlock ensued for the rest of the game until Willer’s breakthrough.

Iowa State continues its weekend action on Sunday, Aug. 25, when they travel to play South Dakota. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
