The ISU soccer team jumps right into the 2013 season this weekend as it takes on two opponents from the state of South Dakota.

The first match, against South Dakota State on Friday, Aug. 23, will be a rematch of last season’s 2-1 ISU victory. Sunday’s match against South Dakota is also a rematch from last season that saw Iowa State earn a 7-1 victory.

Jennifer Dominguez, last season’s offensive MVP for the Cyclones, notched a goal in both games last year.

“We have a different mentality this year because [South Dakota State] always gives us a good game, so it’s going to be a tough game because they are physical and hardworking,” Dominguez said. “They didn’t have a great season last year, so they’re looking to start the season off right.”

ISU coach Wendy Dillinger said the key to a successful weekend for her team will come down to physical play.

“We have to battle physically,” Dillinger said. “Division I soccer is competitive and combative physically, so that’s something we need to bring and have been focused on this [past] week.”

Friday’s match at South Dakota State will be the first of the season for both teams and is set to begin at 6 p.m.
