Arrival comes to Ames

The ABBA tribute band Arrival is coming April 3, 2013, to Stephens Auditorium. Performing at 7:30 p.m. this is the only band with exclusive rights to ABBA’s name, costumes and music.

One of the founding members of the Swedish band, Vicky Norback, wanted to do a proper ABBA show.

“We try to do ABBA justice. We do the music the way they did it, and we also show them the respect they deserve,” Norback said.

Norback, who saw ABBA five times as a teenager, chose the name Arrival because it was ABBA’s most-sold album when it was released in 1976.

Arrival started out as an amateur group in 1995. Most of the group consisted of Norback’s friends. In 1999 Norback changed all the musicians to professional musicians that she hand picked herself.

Since 1999, the musicians have been strictly professional.

Arrival was able to obtain rights to copy ABBA since its very beginning in 1995. The band sent ABBA everything they had done for the performance they hoped they would be able to perform in front of a live audience.

“I called the first time in the middle of the ’90s, and I sent them everything we do. We also sent them recording material we did. I think it’s good, and I think we showed them respect, and they like it,” Norback said.

Arrival has been touring almost continuously since 1995. They have been to more than 53 countries and have currently toured 34 times in America in the past five years.

The band spends time in their home country Sweden, but they still spend a lot of time traveling.

The band does not plan on retiring soon; they will keep performing as long as there is an audience to watch them.

“As long as the audience likes the show and they want to see us, it’ll continue. It’s so fun,” Norback said.
