ISU men’s basketball forward Anthony Booker has apologized for an obscene gesture he made toward the crowd Saturday, which was caught by TV cameras.

The incident occurred in the second half of Iowa State’s victory against West Virginia in its regular season finale.

“I have personally written President Clements and the West Virginia student body president apologizing for making an obscene gesture towards the West Virginia student section in our basketball game Saturday,” Booker said in a statement released by the team. “I got caught up in the emotions of a hard-fought game and lost my composure. It was a poor decision on my part and I am sorry for conducting myself in this manner. I also wish to express regret for putting our university and our basketball program in a poor light. I have learned a valuable life lesson as a result of my poor decision.”

After Booker left the game late in the second half following a foul, he made the gesture toward the crowd. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby released his own statement Monday afternoon, and the conference considers the matter closed.

“The gesture made by basketball player Anthony Booker during the Iowa State at West Virginia men’s basketball game on Saturday, March 9, violated the Big 12 Conference’s rules regarding sportsmanship and ethical conduct,” Bowlsby said in the statement. “Iowa State University and Mr. Booker have taken expedient and appropriate actions. The Conference supports the steps taken by both parties and we consider the matter closed.”
