Men golfers tied for fifth after two rounds, led by first place Fernandez

The ISU men’s golf team improved to a tie for fifth place with Winthrop in the Furman Intercollegiate after the second round of play.

The Cyclones shot a round of 290, improving from the first round score of 292 (582). 

The team was led by Scott Fernandez, who topped his first round score of 69 with a second round score of 68. Fernandez was even par through the first 12 holes, until hitting four birdies on the last six holes, tying Virginia Tech’s Trevor Cone for first place individually (137).

The Cyclones benefitted from a second round, even par performance by junior Zach Steffen. After shooting two-over par in the first round, Steffen is tied for 26th individually in a field of 126. Sam Daley (151) and Collin Foster (152) also contributed to the team effort.

Virginia Tech still holds the tournament lead with a team score of 556 (280-286). North Florida (570), Western Carolina (576), and Troy (579) round out the top four teams.

Play will resume in Greenville, SC on Sunday for the third and final round with the first tee time at 8:00 AM.
