The ISU softball team started out the Fresno State Classic with three straight losses.

After a rain delay on Thursday March 7, the Cyclones were able to build a 6-3 lead on the FSU Bulldogs heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before seeing the lead slip away in the last three innings, losing 7-6. Senior Tori Torrescano went 3-4, batting-in 2 runs with her 32nd homerun of the season. Torrescano was also handed the loss in the bottom of the seventh.

The morning game on Friday, March 8th, the team squared off against No. 6 California. The Cyclones were only able to manage one hit off of Lady Bear hurler Jolene Henderson (13-2) and were ousted in five innings by a score of 11-0. Shortstop Lexi Slater had the lone hit for ISU.

The afternoon game would be a much more competitive game with the Cyclones taking the opposition to extra innings for the second time this season.

Pitcher Torrescano had her fifth career multi-homerun game, driving in three runs along with pitching eight innings for ISU. The teams went into extras with the score tied up at 1 run a piece. Both teams added a run in the eighth inning.

The Cyclones then took a 4-2 lead on Torrescano’s second blast of the game heading into the bottom of the ninth. ISU would watch as the Aztecs exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to steal the win.

The softball team hits the field again Saturday, March 9, against 8th-ranked Oregon and finishes the tournament against 23rd-ranked Oregon State in the afternoon.
