Softball team splits games in Carolina Classic

After both games got rained out on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C., the ISU softball team was able to go split two games on Sunday before the trip back to Ames. 

In the morning game, the Cyclones reached the run limit against Iona and ended the game in the 5th inning by a score of 11-1. ISU pitcher Taylor Smith allowed only one run on two hits to improve here season record to 4-3.

Second baseman Maddie Reese led the team with three hits in three at-bats and added four RBIs. Catcher Sara Davison had two hits in three at-bats for the Cyclones, scoring a pair of runs. 

The Cyclones dropped the second game of the day to Penn State team by a score of 9-8.

Iowa State was up 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but was unable to hang on to the lead as the Nittany Lions scored one run, three runs and one run in the final three innings, respectively.  

Penn State centerfielder Cassidy Bell hit a grand slam in the third inning for the Lions but the Cyclones quickly rallied to go up 6-4 in the fourth inning.

Pitcher Tori Torrescano had a two-run homerun for the Cyclones in the top of the sixth inning

That would be about the last of the offensive push for the Cyclones as PSU reliever Macy Jones was able to strike out the final five ISU batters and get the comeback win.  

The Cyclones will travel to Alabama next weekend for the Easton Classic in Tuscaloosa.
