Letter to the editor: Athletic losses should be graceful

I would like to apologize on behalf of the entire Cyclone fan base for the actions of a select few after the heartbreaking men’s loss to Kansas at Hilton Coliseum Monday night. There is going to be jeering and the usual home-court oppression; that much is expected. Luckily, 99 percent of the interactions with Kansas fans I was a part of and witnessed at Hilton were reasonable and pleasant.

That said, nobody deserves to have threats made against their life on Twitter. No opposing team should have objects thrown at them from the student section while leaving the court. No opposing fan should feel unsafe in our stands. No coach deserves to be rushed by one of our fans.

It was a tough loss to stomach. I get that. Deal with it; you’re a Cyclone. That is supposed to mean something: honor, loyalty and respect. Some of you at Monday’s game could use a lesson in one or all of these categories.

Before we can win big, we have to learn how to lose graciously. Your mothers taught you better.
