Dining hall alternatives

Amber Mohmand

Many students rely on swiping their ISU ID card into the dining halls to get their food. For those without meal plans, here are some alternative places to eat your lunch when you only have $10.

Iowa State is home to several food trucks scattered throughout campus where students can grab a quick meal and eat on their way to class.

Food trucks

One option is Carlos’ Quesadillas, located between Kildee and Lagomarcino Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with food options under $10. The most popular food option is their quesadillas, but they also offer a variety of tacos and burritos.

For those who could be craving comfort foods such as the classic burger and fries, Finley’s Curbside Beastro is another option that is in the same area as Carlos Quesadillas. Finley’s also offers a variety of hotdogs and “Cy-Cones,” which are described as burritos served in a cup, all under $10.

Around the corner, next to Troxel Hall, is the Brick City Grill food truck, offering a variety of burgers, sandwiches and fries for college students running out of lecture halls.

Another popular area students go to for their lunch is near Carver and Beardshear Hall, home to Cheese Steak Factory and Macubana.

Macubana, a food truck served through Cafe Beaudelaire, is known for its popular dish, the “Tempura Mac Attack,” which is a four-cheese covered noodle that is dipped in battered tempura breading and deep-fried. The most expensive dish on the menu is the “cubano sandwich”, which is $7.

Campus Cafes

If you have a long break between your classes and are looking for a place to eat and do your homework, you could consider going to the campus cafes.

There is Bookends Cafe, which is located at Parks Library, open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the school year. There are also cafes located in the Design Building, Lagomarcino Hall, Memorial Union and Veterinary Medicine.

Campustown restaurants

Another area to consider is walking down to Campustown and checking out the local restaurants. For cafes, Stomping Grounds and Arcadia Cafe offer free WiFi and food under $10. If you’re more of a tea person, there is Tea Time, located on Welch Avenue, or 1+1, located on West Street.

If you’re feeling like a pizza, Jeff’s Pizza, Smokin’ Oak and Blaze Pizza on Lincoln Way offer meals under $10.
