Barbecue and grilling enthusiasts will have the opportunity to compete against one another at the first Smoke Over Veishea contest Friday and Saturday.

Smoke Over Veishea is an officially sanctioned event by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the world’s largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts with more than 15,000 members.

The contest has different categories: barbecue chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder and beef brisket. Kansas City Barbeque Society certified judges will sample all entries and determine the grand champion.

The grand champion will win $1,500, and the reserve champion will receive $1,000. First-place finishers in the four categories will win $400 each.

The public can watch the competition. A professional barbecue team also will be serving barbecue Friday.
