ISU Pride Week

Thursday, April 5th marks the beginning of ISU Pride Week. ISU Pride Week consists of several events primarily hosted by the LGBTA Alliance. The events are open to everyone on campus and are a great way to show support and pride for the LGBT community.

Thursday, Dr. Doug Haldeman will speak in the Great Hall at the Memorial Union. His presentation will cover some of the psychological effects that members of the LGBT community may face when dealing with homophobia. He works to promote the awareness of cultural needs of members of the LGBT community.

On Friday is one of the most anticipated events. At 8:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union there will be a drag show. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to Youth & Shelter Services. There will be a dance hosted by the ISU LGBTA Alliance following the drag show.

Monday, April 9th, Dr. Warren J. Blumenfeld will be on campus to speak about the lives of LGBT who lived under Nazi control.

Tuesday contains one of the week’s most unique events. The Identified Line-Up will take place on central campus. This event consists of people standing in a line holding a sheet of paper with their name on it. On the other side of the paper is their sexual orientation or gender identity. People walking by are invited to see if they can guess the sexual orientation or gender identity of those in the line up from 12:00-2:00 PM. Bowling is hosted at 7:00 that evening in the Memorial Union.

Thursday, the film “Were the World Mine” will be presented at 7:00 PM in 001 Carver Hall.

Finally, on Friday, there is a rally outside of Parks Library at noon. Feel free to stop by and show your support for the final day of ISU Pride Week.

This week is a time that many of ISU’s LGBT community get together and show their pride. The campus is, overall, tolerant of members of the LGBT community. However, there are people that are not so tolerant. “Every once in a while you’ll find things and people that are derogatory,” said Freshman Cat Howd. But there are many resources for members of the LGBT community. Every Wednesday there are meetings in Carver Hall for anyone who has questions or just wants to talk. “It’s a safe place,” said Howd. This week is sure to be a safe haven for those who wish to show their pride.
