Release confirms Elliott’s move to Notre Dame

A news release sent by the ISU athletic department to the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday morning — which has been obtained by the Daily — has confirmed earlier reports that ISU secondary coach Bobby Elliott will be leaving to pursue an assistant coaching position at Notre Dame.

“Bobby has informed me that he is leaving our program for a coaching position at Notre Dame,” said ISU coach Paul Rhoads in the release. “We appreciate his contributions to our program and wish the Elliott family all the best in the future.”

Tom Dienhart of the Big Ten Network first reported the news on Tuesday night followed by ISU defensive back Deon Broomfield, who tweeted that Elliott had told players on Monday that he’d be leaving.

Elliott, who has been coaching the ISU secondary since last season, is the second member of coach Paul Rhoads’ staff to leave since the conclusion of the season. Offensive coordinator Tom Herman left his post for the position at Ohio State in December.

Elliott has served as defensive coordinator for 11 seasons with four different teams — most recently with San Diego State from 2006 to 2008. As a secondary coach and defensive coordinator at Iowa from 1987 to 1998, Elliott coached both current Notre Dame co-defensive coordinators Bob Diaco and Kerry Cooks.

When Elliott was defensive coordinator at Kansas State in 2002, his defense was ranked first in the nation in scoring defense and second in the nation in rushing and total defense. Elliott served as defensive coordinator under KSU coach Bill Snyder from 2002 to 2005.

This season, Elliott’s starting secondary ranked in the top seven in total tackles on the team, compiling 298 combined between the four starters — Jacques Washington, Leonard Johnson, Jeremy Reeves and Ter’Ran Benton. Those four also accounted for seven interceptions, which is equivalent to Texas A&M’s team total and two more than Texas Tech had all season.
