Candidate Profile: Michele Bachmann

David Bartholomew

Michele Bachmann

Abortion

Life begins at conception. Federal funding to women’s health care agencies such as Planned Parenthood should be eliminated because they perform abortion surgeries.

Education

Education responsibilities should be devolved back to the states as much as possible in an effort to allow states to decide for themselves how to best craft their own education systems.

Gay marriage

Marriage is between only a man and a woman. While the decision of legalizing gay marriage should be left to state legislatures, federal laws such as the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, should still be kept in place.

Health care

The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” should be immediately repealed because it is a transition to a single-payer health care system. Medicare and Medicaid should also be restructured because they are drivers of the national deficit.

Immigration

America’s immigration laws should be more strictly enforced. Actions taken to enforce it include but are not limited to building a fence on every mile of America’s southern border with Mexico. Amnesty should not be given to illegal aliens already living in the United States.

Military/Foreign policy

The United States should continue to maintain a very strong national defense both at home and abroad. This includes preserving the size and strength of the United States’ military as well as supporting allies such as Israel and standing up to foes such as Iran.

Taxes/Economy

Necessary spending cuts should be made in an effort to reduce the size and role of the federal government and balance the federal budget. The number of tax brackets should be reduced and the corporate tax code should be made simpler. This will allow small business owners to put more money back into their businesses and corporations to bring money back to the United States to invest in American growth and create jobs.
