Two goals by striker Megan Rapinoe propelled the United States women’s soccer team to victory over France 2-1 in Paris, France, on Friday in a 2019 Women’s World Cup quarterfinal.

Rapinoe gave the United States an early 1-0 lead as she scored her first goal of the game in the fifth minute of the game, and the United States would go on to hold a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the 65th minute of the game, Rapinoe scored her second goal of the game that came off of a pass by forward Tobin Heath. 

Heath nearly gave the United States a 3-0 lead in the 75th minute but defender called for offsides which the team found to be a “dubious” offside call according to a team press release. 

France started to mount a comeback in 81st minute as defender Wendie Renard scored but the United States halted their comeback attempt and earned a 2-1 victory 

The United States beat France despite losing the battle of possession 39.3-60.7 and being out shot 20-10. The United States made the most of their offensive chances as eight of their 10 shots were on goal.

Meanwhile, the French only put five of their 20 shots on goal.

With her two goal performance, Rapinoe is tied for first along with teammate, forward Alex Morgan, English forward Ellen White and Australian forward Sam Kerr in goals scored in the tournament with five goals.

After beating France, the United States will face England on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time in Lyon, France. 

The game will be televised on Fox and the winner will advance to the Championship game which will be played on July 7 at 10 a.m. Central.
