Attendees of the Iowa State-Iowa game Saturday may have been able to catch a glimpse of a presidential candidate.

Michele Bachmann, Minnesota representative and presidential candidate, attended the Cy-Hawk pregame tailgating this weekend in an effort to interact directly with the people of Iowa, her associates said.

“I thought this would be a good environment for her to come out and interact with people,” said Iowa Sen. Jack Whitver, who helped host her tailgate.

Bachmann spent the early part of the morning meeting and greeting with constituents, but soon departed from her tent to mingle among tailgaters.

“She adapted well. I felt that when she was on the scene, she got to be herself,” said Iowa Sen. Mark Chelgren.

Chelgren was glad to have been able to bring Bachmann into the Iowa tradition and allow her to see it firsthand.

“This is all about Iowa,” he said “It’s a tradition here — the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones. To me, it’s more about an Iowa tradition if anything else.”

Those who came to see her were happy to have interacted with her, and supporters were impressed by her efforts to be with Iowans.

“It definitely shows that she’s really about the people of Iowa,” said ISU graduate Alex McCool.  “Coming to events shows that she’s invested in the people.”

McCool also was happy to see that Bachmann is invested in young people, or what he called “the generation that votes.”

Bachman will continue on to Florida, Whitver said, but plans to return to Iowa before the 2012 Iowa caucus in the spring.
