Cyclones run-rule Hawkeyes

DES MOINES – The Cyclone softball team run-ruled the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 5-inning 9-1 victory at the Iowa Big 4 tournament on Saturday.

Senior third baseman Dalyn Varela got the Cyclone offense going with a two-RBI single in the top of the second inning that scored Evan Folks and Heidi Kidwell.

Hawkeye infielder Brianna Luna answered in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to make it a 2-1 Cyclone lead.

The Cyclones then put together a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by a Tori Torrescano grand slam to left field with two outs.

With a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth, Folks, the Cyclone catcher, hit a home run of her own to left field that scored pinch-runner Kelsey Enslin.

Senior pitcher Lauren Kennewell also had a terrific outing, pitching all five innings while giving up just one run on four hits.

The Cyclones will be back in action in Des Moines on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. to take on Drake.
