Iowa State track and field sees three move onto quarterfinals, four qualify for nationals

What already looked to be an excellent weekend for the Iowa State men’s and women’s track and field teams, turned into an even greater one on Friday after the Cyclones saw three athletes qualify for quarterfinals, and four more qualify to move onto Austin for the National Championships.
Iowa State will send senior Festus Lagat and senior Roshon Roomes for the men’s team, and Erinn Stenman-Fahey for the women’s team to Austin in the 800-meter run. The men will also send senior Eric Fogltanz in the 400-meter hurdles. Fogltanz advances for the second-straight year to nationals.
Lagat and Roomes finished fourth and fifth, and both ran personal-bests — qualifying for nationals in the 800-meter run with times of 1:46.58 minutes and 1:46.88, respectively. Stenman-Fahey finished 16th and qualified for nationals with a time of 2:05.78. Fogltanz qualified for nationals, running a season-best time of 50.39 seconds, and finishing eighth overall.
The Cyclones will also be sending two others from Thursday’s events to nationals. The women are sending junior Amanda Vestri to compete in the women’s 10,000-meter run. Vestri placed 12th, qualifying with a time of 33:57.37 minutes. The men will be sending Vlad Pavlenko to compete in the men’s hammer throw. Pavlenko placed 10th, qualifying with a throw of 64.64 meters.
For Saturday, the Cyclones will have three athletes compete in qualifying for nationals in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
Placing 15th in the women’s 100-meter hurdles for the Cyclones, sophomore Keira Christie-Galloway qualified for the quarterfinals with a time of 13.20 seconds. She will race for a spot in nationals at 7:05 p.m. PDT/9:05 p.m. CDT.
In the men’s 110-hurdles, Iowa State qualified junior Mason Weh and Logan Schneider for the quarterfinals on Saturday. Weh placed 16th with a time of 13.92 seconds, and Schneider placed 23rd, running a 14.04 to move on to the quarterfinals. They will race for a chance to move onto nationals on Saturday at 7:20 p.m. PDT/9:20 p.m. CDT.
