Iowa State finishes strong at Big 12 Championship, turns focus to NCAA Preliminaries

Iowa State men’s and women’s track and field teams achieved their goal this weekend: to excel at the Big 12 Championship and have a number of athletes qualify for NCAA Preliminaries.

The most impressive performances came from the men in the 4×400 meter relay, 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run, as well as the women in the 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run and 100-meter hurdles.

Iowa State men

In the 4×400-meter relay, the team of sophomore Charlie Johnson, senior Roshon Roomes, senior Eric Fogltanz and sophomore Ben Kelly placed second with a time 3:05.50 minutes.

The 5,000 and 10,000-meter run ended with the most placers in any event by the Cyclones at the Big 12 championship meet.

In the 5,000-meter run, redshirt senior Dan Curts placed first with a time of 14:08.76 minutes. Senior David Too placed second with a time of 14:11.86. Senior Edwin Kurgat placed third with a time of 14:12.32. Freshman Chad Johnson placed sixth with a time of 14:16.16. Senior Thomas Pollard placed eighth with a time of 14:21.28.

In the 10,000-meter run, Kurgat placed second with a time of 23:91.38 minutes. Curts placed third with a time of 29:36.15. Too placed fourth with a time 29:37.84. Pollard placed fifth with a time of 29:45.65. Sophomore Mitchell Day placed with a time of 30:08.19.

Iowa State women

In the 5,000-meter run, junior Cailie Logue finished first with a time of 16:12.81 minutes. Junior Amanda Vestri finished second with a time of 16:23.51. Senior Kelly Naumann finished ninth with a time of 16:45.89.

In the 10,000-meter run, Louge and Vestri placed first and second, with times of 33:36.00 and 33:47.28 minutes, respectively.

In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomores Keira Christie-Galloway and Kaylyn Hall placed first and eighth, with scores of 13.10 and 13.72 seconds.

Team Rankings

The Iowa State women finished second overall, and the men finished sixth overall; their best overall finish at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

With the women having eight individual-event qualifiers, the men having nine individual qualifiers and one team-qualifying event, the Cyclones will look to make a deep run.

Iowa State will compete in the NCAA West Preliminaries Thursday through Saturday at Sacramento State University.
