Advisory: snow and ice mix for Monday

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a winter weather advisory for midnight to 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17. The advisory forecasts snow and ice accumulations for central and north central Iowa.

According to the advisory, “snow will develop late this evening and spread across the area after midnight. The snow will mix with freezing rain and sleet Monday morning.”

The weather service’s Ames forecast predicts snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches overnight. An additional half inch of snowfall is possible before noon Monday. Freezing rain and sleet are possible during the day. The weather service predicts 0.1 inch of ice accumulation.

The city of Ames snow ordinance takes effect after 2 inches of snow falls on city streets. An official announcement will be posted to iowastatedaily.net if the city activates the snow ordinance.
