The Iowa State Cyclones (25-18, 2-8 Big 12) defeated the Baylor Bears (17-25, 2-12 Big 12), 4-1, in game one of their weekend series together at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.

The Cyclones got out to an early lead behind catcher Kaylee Bosworth’s two-run home run in the first inning.

That home run amounted to one of Bosworth’s three hits on the day.

Iowa State struck again in the third inning as first baseman Sally Woolpert singled to left field, bringing in shortstop Sami Williams to extend the Cyclone lead to 3-0.

After a Baylor run in the fourth inning, Iowa State responded in the fifth with a run of their own as designated hitter Talyn Lewis walked with the bases loaded to score center fielder Taylor Nearad.

Nearad had a strong day of her own as she went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a stolen base.

Pitcher Emma Hylen went all seven innings for the Cyclones, giving up four hits and three walks on top of three strikeouts. With the win, Hylen improved to 12-7 on the year.

Hylen got 15 of the 28 total batters she faced to ground out, displaying her efficiency.

The Cyclones put up this win after being swept by the Bears in last year’s series.

Iowa State will be looking to win the next two games in the series to improve its conference record with the Big 12 Tournament coming up.
