Swimmers, divers disappointed with Friday finishes

The Cyclones took to the pool in Evanston, Ill., for the TYR Northwestern Invitational on Friday night.

Friday consisted of preliminaries and finals of the 50 yard Breaststroke, 500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle. The 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 1-meter diving also took place.

“I was really pleased the way we swam in the prelims,” said coach Duane Sorenson.

However, the strong swimming in preliminaries did not transfer to the finals. Sorenson said it’s a good learning experience for the team to swim in the preliminaries and work to be strong coming back into the finals on the same night.

One of the better finishes came from Emily Wiltsie who finished third in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 29.97.

Iowa State’s 400 medley relay also earned third with a time of 3:51.00.  The team consisted of Dani Harris, Jeli Nixt, Elena Carvell and Katie Vollhaber.

High level performances and sticking together is what the divers need, but are still searching for those performances this weekend.

“Overall we were not at our best today,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick.

The TYR Northwestern Invitational continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Norris Aquatic Center in Evanston.
