ISU forward DeMarcus Phillips is out for four to six weeks after breaking his hand Sunday during practice.

A statement released by the team said Phillips fractured a metacarpal bone in his left hand while participating in a drill.

“This was a break that won’t require surgery, which is great news,” said ISU coach Fred Hoiberg. “The break was in his left hand, so he will be able to shoot and continue to participate in conditioning.”

Phillips will be in a cast for three weeks, according to the statement.

Phillips, a junior, transferred to Iowa State after playing two seasons at Marshalltown Community College. He averaged 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his sophomore season at Marshalltown.

The Milwaukee native was named the 2008 Wisconsin Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and was an unanimous selection as the player of the year in Milwaukee in his final season at Washington High School.
