Rapidly rising floodwaters have sent the staff at CyRide scrambling to keep buses dry and operations running as smoothly as possible.

Jen Strohm, transit operations assistant, said everything is constantly changing. She said CyRide is trying to keep opening more routes and find ways to get people between the east and west sides of Ames.

CyRide began moving buses at 3:30 a.m. as the transit headquarters began to flood.

“When I left this morning [the water] was knee deep,” Strohm said.

CyRide temporarily operated out of Hawthorne, the community center at Frederiksen Court, but could only stay there until 2 p.m.  At that point, CyRide began operating out of a bus wired for electronics provided by the city of Ames.

CyRide has been operating without technology and has been providing service updates through its Twitter and Facebook pages.
