SOFTBALL: Cyclones struggle to overcome four-game slump

David Merrill —

Iowa State (22-16) will head back on the road this weekend as it tries to erase a homestretch in which the Cyclones went 1-3.

The Cyclones will face a No. 11 Oklahoma State (32-7) team that has won nine straight games; most recently, knocking off its rival Oklahoma.

The Cowgirls held the Cyclones to two total runs in two games on their way to a sweep.

Oklahoma State holds the second-highest national ranking of all the Big 12, only behind Missouri, who is No. 8 and the Cowgirls earned a sweep against them before beating the Sooners 3-2.

Oklahoma State is 14-1 at home, its only loss coming at the hands of in-state opponent Tulsa, and the team is 6-2 on the road.

The Cowgirls are led by sophomore first baseman Julie Ward, who is batting .360 and has racked up a team-high seven homeruns and 46 RBIs.

Junior third baseman Mariah Gearhart holds the highest batting average on the team at .415 and 15 RBIs.

ISU senior catcher Alex Johnson and senior third baseman Courtney Wray enter the game leading Iowa State in RBIs with 24 and 23 and will need to add to that total if they plan to keep the Cowgirl steamroller in check.

Heidi Kidwell, who has recently moved onto the top 10 all-time list for batting average, is leading the Cyclones with a .386 batting average this season and is third on the career batting average list with a .323 career average.

All-time ISU wins leader Rachel Zabriskie will head into Stillwater, Okla., trying to get over the hump and become the wins leader in the Big 12.

Among her numerous records, she is the only ISU pitcher to record 200 strikeouts in a season twice.
