It’s been less than a week since senior first basemen Sydni Jones gave the Cyclones a 9-5 victory over Nebraska with her walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.

But to Iowa State, it seems like an eternity after getting swept by the Aggies of Texas A&M this past weekend.

The Cyclones will try for a sweep of their own as they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a rematch with the Huskers at Bowlin Stadium.

After scoring only three runs in two games against Texas A&M, Iowa State needs to get back to the run production it experienced in the teams’ last matchup.

“You have to go back and put the ball in play, execute and move the ball,” said coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler.

“You have to just attack and not worry about anything and just play. That’s what we were talking about after the [Texas A&M] game, is just to go out and play and not worry about anything.”

Nine runs is Iowa State’s second highest run output of the season — a feat the team has accomplished only three times. The Cyclones’ highest run output this season to date came in an 11-5 victory over UC-Santa Barbara on March 12.

Iowa State will have a second look at the potent top half of the lineup for the Huskers. The team’s first five hitters are all hitting above .340 on the season.

Freshman designated player Erica Miller has been performing well at the plate as of late. She has recorded at least one hit in four of the past five games for the Cyclones and carries her .311 batting average and 18 RBIs into the rematch with Nebraska.

The Huskers were able to give junior pitcher Rachel Zabriskie some trouble on the mound in their last matchup. Zabriskie went five innings, didn’t record a strikeout and gave up five runs on eight hits and one walk. Four of the five runs were earned.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Kennewell came in for the late-inning relief work and held the Huskers off the scoreboard while striking out three batters and giving up only one run and one walk in her two innings of work before the offense took over.

“I think we just need to go back to basics,” Kennewell said. “Everyone starts thinking about things that happened before and they’ll start looking at the little petty stuff.

“I think we just need to go back to basics and try to start hitting the ball. We can hit the ball, we’re a good ball-hitting club. We need to score more than one run.”

Nebraska comes into this matchup with a 26-19 record, 5-5 in the Big 12. The Huskers split with Baylor in their most recent series, earning a 5-3 victory in game one before dropping the second game 6-2.

Gemeinhardt-Cesler stressed the fact that the team can’t focus on what happened in the past and must concentrate on preparing for future opponents.

“We have to remember that when we come to practice, the next thing in front of us is Nebraska,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said.

“Last time we played Nebraska, it ended up great and that’s what’s in front of us and not what happened yesterday and today.”
