A new face led the Cyclone women’s basketball team in points on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Hilton Coliseum as Iowa State defeated South Dakota 68-43 to wrap up its non-conference schedule. Senior guard Denae Stuckey led the Cyclones in points and rebounds with 13 and nine. 13 points was a career high for the Kansas City, Kan., native.

After South Dakota chipped in the first two points of the game with a pair of free throws, the Cyclones went on a 17-0 run and never looked back. With six and half minutes left to play in the first half Iowa State led 27-6.

With a consistent lead throughout the entire game, and the final non-conference match up on the schedule, coach Bill Fennelly gave some players besides senior point guard Alison Lacey and junior guard Kelsey Bolte, to run the offense.

More new faces including sophomore Chassidy Cole and freshman Jessica Schroll saw a significant amount of playing time and Cole chipped in eight points on the night, including two buckets from three-point land.

South Dakota State attempted to make a bit of a run to end the second half, with a couple threes from Abby Kinder, who finished with 12 points to lead the Coyotes. Heading into the locker room, Iowa State was up 41-19.

Tuesday night’s game was also a chance for freshman post Anna Prins to work her way back into playing with the Cyclones. After having been out with an illness for a few weeks, Fennelly has been working her back into the lineup. Prins posted 10 points in just 17 minutes against South Dakota State after having played just eight minutes against Lafayetted in Iowa State’s previous game.

The second half provided a chance for Iowa State to run a zone defense, something the team doesn’t do often. With conference play approaching, the chance for the Cyclones to get a feel for a zone defense will likely be helpful in the future.

Iowa State is now 12-1 heading in Saturday night’s Big 12 match up against Nebraska. The conference foes face off at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
