One well-known question could be heard throughout the cold and snowy campus Tuesday — “Where’s Waldo?

After a discussion about how to get involved in more campus activities, an ISU freshmen honors seminar decided to play a campus-wide game of Where’s Waldo?

Matthew Beyer, freshman in aerospace engineering, dressed like the recognizable red-and-white-striped character from the book series.

The group sent a Facebook invitation to the ISU network, asking everyone to try and find Beyer, who walked around campus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Waldo. The invite also welcomed other students to dress up in order to add a bit more challenge.

The event had close to 1,800 participants RSVP to the Facebook invite, and despite the blizzard-like weather Tuesday, the game never fell through.

“I think that the snow did little to dissuade the people who intended to dress up in the first place,” Beyer said. “Although it did add a layer of jackets to the mix, making it hard to distinguish the lookalike Waldos. The snow seemed to distract a lot of people and many just didn’t register that I had white duct tape stripes across my shirt.”

Beyer’s costume became an additional job for the honors group.

Combined with his own pair of jeans and shoes, Beyer borrowed a pair of glasses from his roommate and the group wrapped white tape across a red shirt and hat. With only additional under armor for warmth, Beyer made his trek across campus. Much to his excitement, the Facebook group played along.

“An exciting moment was watching a car drive past the bus stop I was waiting at, pull a U-turn in front of UDCC, and drive back to ask if he could take my picture.” Beyer said. “My hands were a little cold and people told me my face looked bad, but it was definitely tolerable.”

After such a success from its first trial, the Waldo game could hopefully come back for another run.

“This was great, harmless fun, especially right before finals,” Beyer said. “It will just have to be something to keep an eye out for next year.”
